Aquaculture Development

Washington is a major aquaculture state, with production of over 67 million pounds of fish and shellfish annually, worth nearly $58 million wholesale.  Aquaculture producers need applied research and current information on improved culture techniques, including new species development, diOyster culture developmentsease control, product quality and development, ecological impacts, and genetics.  Broodstock improvement is needed to maximize shellfish production in intertidal areas, and ecological impacts need to be quantified to guide possible future regulatory action.

One major problem of shellfish growers in Willapa Bay and Grays Harbor is the burrowing shrimp species because they alter and soften bottom substrates.  As a member of the Burrowing Shrimp Integrated Pest Management Committee, Steve Harbell has received support from the WSARE (Western Sustainable Agriculture and Research and Education) program to look at new physical, biological and chemical controls for this problematic species.

Through WRAC (Western Regional Aquaculture Center), USDA, projects and funding levels are determined for the fiscal year, on-going research and extension projects are reviewed and recommendations are made on future projects.

Public awareness of this industry is coordinated through aquaculture bulletins from twelve western states and shellfish displays which educate coastal residents on the oyster industry in Willapa Bay and Grays Harbor.
