Sewing is a skill traditionally consistent with the needs and work of independent and self-sufficient rural families and communities as Pacific and Grays Harbor Counties are.  Primarily, the senior population possesses these skills and understanding of sewing and textile work as creative work, a connection that brings together isolated rural residents in common projects, and as part of assuring family independence. The generation gap between the youth of today and the senior population often keeps these skills from being shared. Quilt Camp West came from a need to share sewing skills and positive adult youth interactions.

Sleepy Heads West Quilt Camp was developed and held the last week of June 2007 at Camp Morehead. Screened and trained 4-H Quilter Volunteers act as positive role models and resources for the mentor/youth teams. Each 4-H Volunteer completed training on adult and youth partnerships, youth development, child protection and sewing. They act as a camp resource. The camp participants are youth/mentor multigenerational teams, which work together sewing a quilt while strengthening their bonds of friendship. Curriculum from Sally Walter’s Sleepy Heads Quilt Camp in Benton / Franklin Counties provided the curriculum for the quilting project. The planning team made use of 4-H challenge and leadership curriculum for mentoring learning.
